About the project and how to have your say

The A4 Western Avenue is an east-west spine connection extending between Speen and the Robin Hood roundabout. It accommodates high volumes of motorised traffic. The emerging West Berkshire LCWIP has identified the A4 Western Avenue as a primary corridor for cycling and walking as part of the active travel network development.

The scheme has been designed with a whole corridor approach to improve cycling and walking between the various trip origins and destinations, including schools, supermarkets, businesses, shops and residential areas to connect to the town centre. The headquarters of two of the largest employers in the district, Micro Focus and Vodafone are located on this road. The scheme will redefine the streetscape and provide physical measures to prevent parking abuse on the A4 caused by commuters to the area.

What we propose

The proposal concentrates on the western section of the A4 Western Avenue between Battle Close junction and Western Avenue/Oxford Road roundabout. We propose to:

  • Reduce the width of the carriageway to provide space for segregated cycle tracks.
  • Widen crossing islands for dual usage.
  • Remove the staggered crossing island.
  • Upgrade the life-expired signal equipment.
  • Kerb lines will also be realigned to make space for protected cycle lanes, and the staggered crossing is to be converted to a single stream crossing to remove the pinch point for cyclists. Footways will be decluttered and widened and separated from the new cycle lanes to prevent conflict between users. Pedestrians and cyclists will have priority over side roads by raised road humps and parallel zebra and cycle crossings.

The improvements have been designed according to the standards set out in the Cycle Infrastructure Design guidance provided by the Department for Transport (LTN1/20) .

    Consultation Closed

The consultation period for residents to have their say on this proposal has ended.

Following the close of the initial consultation, your feedback and suggestions are being considered, and we will publish the results and the next steps shortly.

If the scheme is installed, a new Design feedback consultation will be opened for you to tell us about your experiences, report on the impact the installed scheme may have had, or suggest any further improvements you think would be beneficial. Once the pilot scheme has been in place for 6 to 9 months it will be reviewed, and if appropriate, changed according to the feedback you provide. The consultation will remain open for the life of the pilot scheme, approximately 12 to 18 months.

At the end of the pilot all feedback will be considered before the scheme is made permanent or removed completely.

    How to be kept informed

Results and updates will be regularly reported through the Commonplace news articles. Registering your interest will ensure you are kept informed.
